browse (1 / 3)

The United Nations Building is one of the most distinctive, imposing buildings of the New York skyline. Located on the east side of Midtown Manhattan, the United Nations headquarters is where the world-governing body operates from, serving as a centre for international cooperation. The grounds that the United Nations Headquarters are located on are considered international territory. Built in 1949, and completed in 1950, the United Nations Headquarters is located beside East River, and was donated by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. to the people of the world. The hallway of the United Nations Headquarters, in the General Assembly Building, has portraits of all the previous United Nations Secretary Generals that are testimonies to some of the past leaders of the world. Take a tour of the United Nations Headquarters, seeing the enormous conference hall of the General Assembly; where it all happens. Taking a tour of the grounds surrounding the secretariat tower, the most prominent and highest building, is worth the trip on its own: with exemplary gardens and unique statues; the grounds contain some of the most beautiful structures. The famous collection of the entire 192 member states are prominently displayed near the fence of the United Nations HQ. One of the most famous sculptures is the 'knotted gun' that was a gift of the Luxemburg government. Another famous sculpture is the 'Let us Beat Swords into Ploughshares' sculpture that was a gift from the Soviet Union.

Other structures include the Marc Chagall stained glass window and the Japanese Peace Bell that tolls at the opening of each General Assembly. A Chinese ivory carving is also prominently on display. A beautiful Venetian mosaic is another scenic attraction of the United Nations HQ. Taking a guided tour will, without a doubt, give you access to interesting little-known facts about the buildings of the United Nations HQ and the trivia about the famous presidents and world-leaders that have passed through its halls. While in New York, take advantage of visiting this testament to international cooperation. Make the most of your stay in the self-catering apartments of Midtown Manhattan, or make a sojourn into the New York countryside, staying in luxury self-catering log cabins with fireplaces and hot tubs. Other attractions you will enjoy in New York include visiting the Empire State Building and the Rockefeller Center. The observation decks atop both of these monumental giants of the New York skyline provide you with the most extensive and panoramic of views over New York and beyond. Visiting the Niagara Falls is one of the most exhilarating day-trips available in New York. Stroll in Central Park or visit Times Square to enjoy the best shopping experience that New York has to offer.
